This club is for 4th and 5th graders. The Mathletes meet in Room 13 once a week to go over challenging, critical thinking math problems. The club is open to anyone that wants to do difficult (and fun) math problems during PE/lunch time. During Math Club, the students have the opportunity to work on exciting and challenging math problems either in groups, with partners, or independently. The strategic math word problems encourage the students to use their critical-thinking skills in order to come up with a step by step strategy to solve the problem. It is beneficial for the students to see that you can use different approaches and methods to solve a problem correctly. The top 5 mathletes from the club participate in the Mathlete tournament at the end of the school year.
The Green Team helps to spread the Green5 message across campus. The 5 Rs are: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Ride, and Rethink. The Green Team encourages and educates students to recycle, reduce, reuse, and compost during lunch and around the school grounds. Once a week, each Green Team member will help out during lunch to mentor students and show them where to put their trash. It is always a good idea to wear gloves while helping in the lunch area. If you allow your child to be a Green Team member, it would be helpful if you can purchase disposable gloves for your child. The Green Team meets regularly to talk about ways to beautify our school, discuss environmental issues, and brainstorm ways to save and reuse energy.
Student Council members meet once a week in Room 13. This club is for grades 3 - 5. The members were voted into Student Council through an election process in their homeroom classrooms. We come up with ways to make El Rincon an even better place. It is a great way to get students involved in our school community and for them to have a sense of accomplishment. We work on team building skills, encourage good and appropriate characteristic traits, and problem solve. Student Council members collaborate and show their creativity as they make posters to advertise certain events taking place at the school, as well as promote the 6 Pillars: Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, Citizenship.
